I’ll be honest. I”m not much for faux food, but when I saw a video on how to make faux fall apples, I was intrigued. Did really they look real? Were they that easy to make? I decided to make a few just to find out! Today I’m sharing how to DIY faux fall apples. Or should I say Caramel apples?
Supplies
Here are the supplies to make faux fall apples:
Carmel Colored Acrylic Craft paint
Sticks
Scissors or craft knife
Steel Cut Oats
Paper plate
Bowl
plastic spoon
wax paper
Step 1
Remove the stem from your faux apple.
Step 2
Carve a hole in the top of your apple for your stick.
Since I had gathered sticks from my front yard to put into the apples for a handle, I just needed to carve out a small hole.
However, the craft knife didn’t have the muscle to create the hole.
So I ended up using a pair of scissors and it worked perfectly!
Just be sure to make the hole slightly smaller than your sticks.
You want the sticks to fit snuggly into the hole.
Step 3
Insert stick into the apple.
Step 4
Mix your Mod Podge and paint to a 1:1 ratio.
I used the paint color Coffee Latte.
It’s the perfect caramel color.
Mix the the podge and the paint well in a bowl deep enough to submerge the apple into the paint.
Step 5
Roll your apple in the paint mixture.
Simply roll your apple in the paint to create the faux caramel apple look that you want.
I found that using a disposable spoon to help spread the paint worked really well.
Step 6
Add the “nuts” to your apple.
Using a paper plate pour out just enough steel cut oats to sit your apple on.
Then pour and roll the apple until you have the “nut” coverage that you want.
Set the apple on wax paper to dry.
Dry time depends upon how thick your paint mixture is, humidity, etc.
Mine took a good 2 – 3 hours, however I let them set overnight.
The next day I tied some raffia onto the sticks for a little something extra and my faux fall apples were done!
Honestly, other than drying time, these apples were super easy and took very little time.
On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the easiest and 10 being the hardest, this is a 1!
Do they look real?
Yes, they do!
Even the steel cut oats look like nuts until you get up close and personal!
This was a fun craft that even your kids would love.
