Halloween Treat Bags

I LOVE Halloween treat bags! Don’t you? I mean, what’s not to love?

It’s the thrill of the unknown for me. Is there candy? Maybe a few treats? Or maybe even a trick or two hidden inside?  The Hub’s family was coming to the castle to have some Halloween fun, so I figured this was the perfect time to make a few Halloween Treat bags for all of our Littles!

I am no expert on sewing by any means, I’ll give you a quick overview of the steps I used to make my bags, but you can find a really simple and thorough tutorial here.

This is a list of things that you will need to make your bags:

1. Sewing Machine

2. Thread

3. Fat Quarters: I almost named this post “Fat Quarters are my Friend”. Recently, I used them to make napkins and today I am using them to make treat bags. In fact, each fat quarter measures 18″ x 21″ so I  easily made two bags out of each fat quarter.

4. Trim ( optional) I used my Silhouette to cut out spooky Halloween glitter letters.

5. Ribbon

I made a pattern to ensure that all bags were the same and to speed things up a little bit.

The only thing I did different from the tutorial was that I used two different kinds of material to make each bag.

I did this by cutting two patterns. One, the larger bottom half, was 6 1/2 inches by 7 1/2 inches. The second piece was 2 1/2 inches by 7 1/2 inches.  I added 1/4 inch to the length of  both pieces to allow for the seam.

Cut 2 of each piece to make your bag.

Next, with right sides together, sew the bag together.  Start the seam 2 1/2 inches from the top. Sew down the side, across the bottom and up the next side. Stop sewing 2 1/2 inches from the top on that side too. You leave the 2 1/2 inches on each side to sew a casing for your draw stings.

To make your casing for the drawstrings, fold down 1/2 inch of material from the top. Press. Then fold down the material again, 1 inch. Press.  Sew as close to the edge of the material as you can to create your casing.

At this point, the sewing of your bag is done.

Next up, inserting your ribbon into the casing.

I cut two 16 inch pieces of ribbon to use as my drawstrings.

Attach a safety pin to the end of the ribbon.

Insert the safety pin into the casing, pulling it through. It will pull your ribbon through for you.

Once  you have pulled both ribbons through the casings, make sure that the ribbons are even, then tie a knot using both ribbons.

Your Halloween treat bags are finished.

Using my silhouette, I cut out spooky Halloween glitter letters to iron on each bag. This is perfect for my Little’s. It makes it super easy to keep track of who’s bag is who’s. Anyone under the age of 10 knows how important that is!

It doesn’t hurt that they are so cute either.

I made  a total of 13 bags in about 3 hours.  I truly believe that if I can do it, so can you.  Let’s face it, I can sew a some what  straight line, but that is about it!

I filled my Halloween treat bags with candy, glow in the dark bracelets, and tiny toys. I love shopping Target’s dollar isle. I am sure that Target loves me to shop there too!

Happy Halloween!
