Welcome to July’s DIY Challenge! I’m so glad that you are here. This month Terrie from Decorate and More With Tip issued us the challenge of making something with blackboard paint. After much thought, I decided to share how to make a hanging blackboard.

Supplies:
If you decide to make your own hanging blackboard, here are the supplies you will need.
twine
beads
Scissors
Blue Tape
Flower of your choice
Hot glue
Hot Glue gun
Step 1:
Tape off the inside wooden edge of your board.
Once this is done, paint one – two coats of chalkboard paint on the flat surface.
TIP: Once your paint has set up remove the blue tape before the paint completely dries. This usually insures that you have a nice clean paint line between the flat surface and the raised edge.
Step 2:
Now it’s time to give the blackboard frame a little color.
You could certainly paint this area, however I chose to stain it using Vintage Effects wash.
Simply paint the wash on and leave for about 15 seconds, then wipe it off with a paper towel.
Continue doing this until the entire frame is stained.
I love using the wash because it dries quickly.
If the stain isn’t as dark as you’d like, let it dry then add another coat.
I found these beaded napkin rings on sale for 4.00.
Which was much cheaper than buying raw wooden beads.
Step 3:
Simply cut the napkin ring apart and take the beads off of the string holding them together.
Then, using BBQ skewers, place the beads on the skewers and paint the beads white.
Lay the skewers on a plate and let them dry completely.
Step 4:
Attach the beads to the chalkboard.
About 10 inches down from the center on both sides, mark the spot with a pencil.
Drill a hole in the center of the frame.
( Be sure not to go all the way through the frame!)
You are drilling a pilot hole for screws.
Using a screw driver, place screw into the hole leaving about 1/8″ between the back of the screw head and the frame.
Once your beads are dry, string them on a piece of twine.
Then tie one end of your beads to the screw.
The screw will keep your beads securely attached to the chalkboard.
Repeat on the other side.
Step 5:
Hide the tail of the twine by gluing it to the side and back of the chalkboard.
Also, I hate to see the shiny silver screw, so I paint the head of the screw a brown to camouflage it!
Step 6:
Using a flower of your choice attach it to the to upper left hand corner of the blackboard with a hot glue gun.
Your hanging blackboard is finished and ready for you to write your favorite wording on it!
Super simple, easy and looks great!
