How to Make a Valentine’s Door Hanger

I love the Ten on the 10th! This month my blogger friends and I chose a Valentine’s Day theme to share with you.  Can we share wonderful Valentines ideas with you for under $10? Yes, we can! Want to know how to make a Valentine’s Door Hanger that is cute and inexpensive?

Well, grab a cup of something fun and a comfy chair. I’ve got a lot to share with you! I apologize ahead of time for it being so long.

First, I used large sheets of brown painters paper to drew a heart on it.  My paper was a little thinner than I wanted it to be, so I cut out 4 sheets of paper hearts.

The heart needed a little more weight, so I also cut out a thin layer of batting to go between the paper hearts.  Two paper hearts on top, two on bottom.

Once that was done, I used my sewing machine to sew them together.

Don’t have a sewing machine? Now worries, you could easily glue it together or using a needle and thread, hand sew it together. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just needs to stay together.

For a little fun, I cut the edges of my heart with pinking sheers.

Once the heart was put together, it was time to paint! The wet paint makes wrinkles in the paper, don’t worry, those will disappear as the paint dries.

My heart is painted, now for the fun part. Decorating!

I drew a line about one half inch away from the edge of the stitching. This heart is free style and fun, so I just eye balled it!

Once the line is drawn, paint it white between the line and the stitching.

While the white paint was drying, I used my round sponges, in three different sizes, to paint white and red dots onto the center of my heart.

Don’t have round sponges? Lay a round lid onto the paper and draw around it, then paint it.

Once your white paint is dry, paint black stripes onto the white band. As you can see, they aren’t perfectly spaced or painted. Remember? I told you it was free style!

Instead of just sitting and watching paint dry, I made a sweet bow out of leftover pieces of co-ordinating ribbon. I feel like the bow is optional. The heart door hanger would be cute without it.

Now that your paint is dry, it’s time to use some small wire to make a handle to hang your heart.

I used about 16 inches and curled it around a pencil, here and there for some interest , then curved it into a “U” shape.

When that was done, I inserted each end of the wire about an inch deep between the two layers of paper hearts.

To make sure that it stayed secure, I hot glued around the wire, attaching it to the paper and batting.

If you are using a bow, hot glue the bow onto the heart and you are finished!

I love that my Valentine’s door hanger is fun, colorful and it’s lightweight.

The door hanger would also look cute inside too!

So how much did my door hanger cost?

Painter Paper is $2.98 for 180 feet. I used about four feet, but I’ll be generous and say $1.00 for the paper.

Acrylic craft paint is on sale at Hobby Lobby for .96 cents each. 4 colors = $4.00

Batting: $5.99 a roll, less your 40% off coupon is $3.59. I used about 1/4 of the roll: $.89

Wire: $3.99 a roll. Again, I used less than 1/4 of the roll: $1.00

My grand total came to: $6.89. Woo Hoo!

I actually made my wreath for free, as I used only materials I had on hand. In serious need to clean out the craft closet!

I hope you enjoyed learning how to make a Valentine’s door hanger as much as I did making it. Now, it’s time to check out what wonderful ideas my Ten on 10th blogger friends are sharing!
