Hey! Happy Tuesday. I’ve been working on Valentine’s Day decorations here at the Castle. There are three things that no matter how big or small the holiday is, they get a little decorating. My Chalkboard, my kitchen hutch and my two tiered tray. I used to really struggle with designing my tiered trays until I broke it down into simple easy steps. So today I thought I’d share how to decorate my two tiered tray in 5 easy steps!
Two Tiered Tray In 5 Easy Steps
Step 1
Decide what tray you will be using.
I have friends who have several trays to choose from.
Me? Well, I just have this one tray.
And my friend Corine?
She doesn’t have one.
When she needs one she simply stacks things like trays and candlesticks to make her own!
My point is that there are a ton of different kinds of trays out there.
Choose or make the one you love.
Step 2
Choose your theme.
This for me is the easy part.
I generally use holidays.
However, sometimes I go for longevity and do seasons.
You could also do birthdays, anniversaries… really whatever is important to you!
Step 3
Choose focal points for your tray.
Just like decorating a room, your tray needs large statement pieces for the eye to land on.
I like to use 3 on my tray.
This time I used one large one on the top and two on the bottom.
As you can see here, I have the mug with a large heart on the top.
A valentine sign I made last year and a candy jar are the focal points on the bottom tray.
Step 4
Add in greenery or florals.
Or if you are like me, sometimes I like to be daring and add both!
Scandalous, I know!
Greenery and florals ground the large items and let your eyes rest.
They add much needed texture and color.
Don’t be afraid to mix it up and use more than one kind of each.
Step 5:
Add filler.
Filler is all of the smaller things that fill in holes and blank spaces left between the large pieces and the floral items.
On the top shelf of my tray, all I needed to add was a glittery heart.
However, on the bottom tray I added napkins, beads, a rolling pin and another small sign.
Theses filler pieces really tie everything together.
When thinking of what kind of fillers to use think about your theme.
Here are a few examples:
Easter – carrots, eggs, grass, napkins, napkin rings, a jar with straws.
Spring – nests, small birds, eggs, small bugs, and birdhouses

Before I go, I want to give you a few tips to make it even easier!
Repeat like items and colors.
Be sure to layer items.
Use different heights of items and different textures.
And last – and this ones super important – if you are placing your tray where you can see all sides, be sure and decorate all the way around!
