If you’ve been to the Dollar Tree lately you know that they are killing it in the Valentine department.
I found this cute sign there recently.
While I think it’s super cute, it doesn’t really match my decor.
I knew that I wanted to add a touch of Valentine’s Day decor in my powder bath so I decided to make the sign match my favorite towels!
Lots of pretty color with almost a hint of a watercolor feel to them.
Take The Sign Apart
The fist step was to take the backing off of the sign.
Next, remove the word love from the glass using a sharp blade.
Be sure that it is sharp or it will scratch the glass.
Once the word had been removed, it was time to clean the glass and set the frame and glass aside.
Painting a Watercolor Heart
Step 2 was to paint the watercolor heart.
I pulled out my watercolors, watercolor paper, paint brush and pencil.
Lightly drew a heart on the paper.
Then it was time for the fun!
Slapping paint onto the drawn heart.
I’m serious.
I painted water over the heart then started adding watered down paint to the heart using colors that were found in my towels.
No rhyme or reason.
And you don’t have to be an artist to do this.
Just let your inner kindergarten self come out to play!
The last color I used was the hot pink, as that was the color I wanted to be most dominant.
Mount Your Watercolor Painting
While my heart was drying, I cut a piece of scrapbook paper out the size of my cardboard sign backing.
I have to tell you that the photo does not do justice to how pretty this glitter paper is!
It has all of the colors in my towels and is just beautiful!
Once my heart was dry, using glue dots, I applied the heart painting to the scrapbook paper.
Put The Sign Back Together
Now it’s just a matter of placing the mounted watercolor into your frame and placing the backing onto the frame.
Tip: This sign had brad nails nailed into the frame through the backing. When taking the sign apart, I gently removed the brads trying not to bend them. This made reassembling the frame and backing a breeze! Simply put the brads back into the holes and tap them in with a hammer. Your signs ready to go.
Embellish The Sign
At this point I could have left my sign just as it is and it would have been super cute.
However, I wanted to add a little something extra.
I thought about adding a bow with all of the colors, but decided to go with something a little more tailored.
I took three different colors of bakers twine and wrapped it around the top of the sign twice, then tied it in a knot.
Next, I added this sweet little key to the twine and tied the twine in a bow.
I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!
