Decoupaged Easter Rabbit

Welcome to the DIY Challenge! This month’s theme is Decoupage. Decoupage is the art or craft of decorating objects with paper cut-outs. Usually, attaching the paper with glue.  When our hostess Terrie from Decorate And More With Tip gave us our challenge I knew immediately that I want to do a decoupaged Easter Rabbit. Terrie always comes up with the best challenges for us!

Now this is a little long, so grab something to drink, find a cozy spot and settle in!

Supplies

Wood

Jig Saw

Sander

Acrylic paint

Paint brush

Scrapbook paper

Mod Podge

Iron

The first thing I did was make my pattern.

I simply used a small dish to form the head, then drew in the ears until I was happy with the shape.

Making the wooden Bunny

Once I cut out the pattern, I traced it onto a 1″ thick piece of scrap wood I had in the garage.

Then I cut it out using my jig saw.

Once that was done, I gave it a good sand.

Now, if you aren’t handy with power tools, don’t be discouraged, there are plenty of places to buy wooden cutouts!

Using white paint, paint the back and the sides of the wooden bunny.

Decoupage The Bunny

If you have ever done a Mod Podge project?

Everything is rocking right along and then you notice that the paper has bubbles and wrinkles in it?

Up until recently I thought that was just part of it.

However, I’m here to tell you that it is not!

Here’s how.

Paint a nice even coat of Mod Podge onto the wooden bunny.

Let it dry.

Yes, let it dry!

Once it’s dry, trace the shape of the bunny onto a piece of scrapbook paper.

Cut out the bunny you just traced.

Place the bunny cut out onto the wooden bunny.

Be sure to line it up with all edges.

Now here’s where the magic happens.

Place parchment paper or in my case a thermal protection sheet on top of the paper.

Iron.

Yep, iron the wooden piece!

Tip: Don’t move the iron back and forth, rather place it on an area for several seconds, lift and move to the next section. Be sure to get the edges!

The heat melts the Mod Podge and adheres the paper to the wood.

AND… no bubbles or wrinkles!

Finish The Bunny

Once the paper is cool to the touch, paint on the bunny’s face.

When the paint on the face has dried, give the entire piece, front , back and sides an even coat of Mod Podge.

Your bunny is finished!

While this definitely isn’t the typical way to decoupage, it’s definitely easy to do!

Best part?

No bubbles or wrinkles!

A decoupaged Easter rabbit couldn’t be easier.
