Tik Tok Made Me Do It
I’ve done a lot of things with and to candles. I’ve made them from scratch, I’ve decoupaged them, wrapped them in all kinds of paper, and I’ve painted them. But I have never melted them down and twisted them into different shapes. In my defense, Tik ToK made me do it!
Today is Under $10 on the 10th! Where a group of bloggers get together and share ideas that cost less than $10.00.
Which is one of my favorite days of the year!
Our theme this month is the craft of our choice.
We’ve had a few snow days here in North Texas, so what better way to pass the time inside than try out a Tik Tok Craft.
When I saw this post from Better Homes and Gardens on how to twist candles and I thought “Why not?”
I’d seen them all on-line, but one pair can run $24.00 and up.
Which is a little out of my budget.
Turns out, it was super easy to make them!
Supplies
Here are the supplies you will need to make them.
Candlesticks of your choice.
Thermometer – I used my candy thermometer
Glass jar, pitcher etc to hold the hot water.
Wax paper
Rolling pin
Heat The Candle
The first step is to heat up your candle.
To do this, heat up your water to 100 degrees.
This is about the temp of bath water.
Pour your water into a container tall enough to immerse the candle.
Let your candles sit about 10 minutes.
Shape Your Candle
Once your candles have heated up, lay them out on wax paper and using a rolling pin, glass etc. slightly flatten the area that you are wanting to twist.
I started using the rolling pin, but it didn’t work so well.
Using the palm of my hand to flatten the candle worked much better for me.
Once you have flattened your area, slowly start to twist your candle into the shape that you want it to be.
If you see that it isn’t easily twisting, put it back into the warm water for a minute or so.
Set the Candle Shape
Once you have the desired shape, set the candle shape by dipping it into cold water.
Lay out on a flat towel to dry.
Tips
- If you have white spots on your candle where you twisted, simply rub on the spot.
The Heat from your hands will melt the spot and the spot will disappear.
2. Don’t start with expensive candles.
I bought a dozen of these pink candles a few years ago and had them lying around.
The first candle I tried to twist I ruined because it wasn’t warm enough.
Even though it would twist, it tore and ruined the candle.
So start with inexpensive candles until you get the hang of twisting.
I have to say, this Tik Tok made me do it craft was super easy, took about 15 minutes and the candles look really good.
This Tik Tok craft gets an 5 on a scale of 1 to 5.
Cost:
Candles: I already had mine so I didn’t spend anything, however you can find candles just about everywhere.
Dollar Tree: sets of two in several different colors for $1.25
Michaels: has individual taper candles for $1.99, multiple colors available.
Target: Hearth and Hand collection has a set of two for $3.99, multiple colors available.
So you can see you can make a ton of these fun candles for very little money!
I can see me trying out different shapes, twists and turns in lots of different color for all of the upcoming holidays.

Tammy
TikTok might have made you do this, but Tammy made me!! 🙂
What a great way to get a high-end candle for less. Thanks for sharing, Tammy, I love this.
It’s so much fun Terrie! Kind of addictive. I had to stop myself from dragging every taper I had in the house out and trying different ways to twist them! Hope you have fun with it.
How cute! They turned out great, how fun to do too. I bet my granddaughters would love to try this too.
Corine it really is a fun and fairly easy project. Your grands would love it and you will love doing it with them. I have some white ones I want to try and get a thicker barley twist with! Post pics if you make some.
Love your twisted candles! I never would have thought that twist style could be done so easily. Yours turned out looking fabulous!
I wouldn’t have believed that you could twist candles either until I saw a TikTok! Who knew? But it was fun!
Thanks Allyson! I had a ton of fun making them for sure!
Looks like I need to spend more time on TikTok or here with you! These looks so fun and I love the pop of color on your table.
Cindy I get into so much trouble watching TikTok videos! I have a severe case of “I want to try that!” every time! There are some real creative people out there for sure!
Great idea and turned out great, Tammy. I love that wall! The candles look perfect there, picking up the punk in the wallpaper. Beautiful!
*pink, lol
Thanks Rita! They were so fun to make that I ma be twisting all of the candles in my house before long! lol
